Accidental Suite

A Celebration of Dance and Human Connection!

Born from raw experimentation and wrangled through structured improvisation, Accidental Suite builds relational tension through increasing and varied forms of connection, weaving together people and their stories in a common, if abstract, space.

Featuring 9 dancers and an original score by Zac Selissen, this evening-length celebration event, originally derived from Barkin/Selissen Project’s open-access dance film series Titles Project, evokes chance encounters, near misses, and the magnetic push and pull of relationships. In these deeply alienating times, Accidental Suite taps into the most essential of human needs: relating to one another.

Differential Cohomology

An Evening of Math and Dance

What do high-level mathematics and concert dance have in common? Beauty, creativity, and way more than meets the eye…

Commissioned by celebrated mathematician James Simons, Differential Cohomology was inspired by the mathematical theory of the same name. Set to music by the Sirius String Quartet and seamlessly blending the disciplines of science and the humanities, Differential Cohomology takes the audience on a captivating abstract journey by attaching human dimensions to a mathematical theory.

Follow the ensemble of dancers as they traverse specific sequences and patterns on a hexagonal diagram where they encounter intimacy, wild rebellion, and the inevitability of being cancelled out upon arrival.

This program may also include additional repertory selections.

Titles Project Screen Dances

See the dance film project that reached thousands of viewers world-wide!

In 2019, B/S P launched the Titles Project, an open-access online series of short dance films, created in-house, with the goal of meeting our audience where they are. The dances were conceived from a list of titles, each more different than the next, united in spirit.

By 2020, Titles Project had successfully reached thousands of people globally, including in Canada, Mexico, South America, the U.K., Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Southeast Asia, and across the entire United States.

In addition to the virtual screening of select films, this opportunity includes pre or post-performance discussions with the choreographers and directors.

Our Process to Product and Dance on Film classes (see below) work very well to compliment this film series creating a well-rounded, complete experience.

Classes & Workshops

Movement-Based Classes

ACT Workshop

Workshops for partnerships and collaboration in process and partnering, featuring elements of Awareness,  Communication, and Trust.

Technique

B/S P's signature Fusion Reaction class leads students on a journey from the inside out. Using Fusion Reaction, a  methodology developed by Kyla Barkin, students harness internal and external forces to create space for  dynamic shifts and enliven the body and mind. The class places attention on  centering, expansiveness, opposition, grounding, athleticism, and nuance.

Alternatively or complimentary, technique 'Class in a Box' is designed for limited space or time using a medley of influences including somatics, yoga, fitness, martial arts, physical therapy and rehab forms, various classical/modern/contemporary techniques, hints of Flamenco, street dance, and B/S P repertory. This toolkit of exercises may be adapted or abbreviated into functional excerpts as needed for different environments and circumstances.

Process to Product

A class exploring repertory, composition and the use of improvisation. Participants learn and create, improvise, explore and build on ideas, elements, and creative tools. This workshop touches on different artistic options and approaches to creative direction and/or work.

Discussion-Based Classes

Non-movement based classes tailored for lecture demonstration and/or the classroom environment (virtual or in-person)

Freelance Dance as a Career

Realities and healthy strategies for the professional freelance dance landscape; making the most of what is possible without sacrificing quality across  projects: how to maintain income, contracts, boundaries, co- worker dynamics, scheduling, warm-up and travel  time, communications and organization, and professional etiquette.

Dance on Film

How to conceptualize, choreograph, and plan for creating dances for film and virtual settings.

Please Note: ALL of these options can be done in the classroom, in a virtual setting, or through a Lec/Dem format if requested. In addition, ALL may be adjusted for different levels of dance ability and/or for non-dancers.

A supplementary list of classes is available as well.
